<p><tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Liodessus">Liodessus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> Guignot, 1939 are small diving beetles, up to 3.2 mm long, which occur throughout the New World. Afrotropical species assigned to this genus (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B8">Biström 1988</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B10">Nilsson and Hájek 2026</xref>) belong to a different phylogenetic lineage that remains unnamed (unpublished work by M. Balke, K. Miller and J. Bergsten).</p>
      <p>In the high Andes, at altitudes from ca. 3,000 to almost 5,000 meters, <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Liodessus">Liodessus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> are the most abundant aquatic beetles (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">Balke et al. 2020a</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">2020b</xref>). Despite their abundance, diving beetles from high-altitude Páramo and Puna ecosystems remain poorly studied. Since 2019, 11 new species and one subspecies have been described from Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B9">Megna et al. 2019</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B4">Balke et al. 2020b</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B6">2021a</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B7">2021b</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B1">2022</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B5">2023</xref>, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B2">2024</xref>), raising the number of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Liodessus">Liodessus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> known from the Neotropical Region to 33 species and 10 subspecies (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B10">Nilsson and Hájek 2026</xref>).</p>
<p>Since then, it has become apparent that many additional species remain to be discovered, most of them likely microendemics based on our current understanding of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Liodessus">Liodessus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>. Here, we continue our collaborative research project on the water beetle fauna of the high-mountain regions of the Neotropics by reporting the discovery of two new species of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Liodessus">Liodessus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> from Costa Rica.</p>

<p>The two new species described here represent the first mid- to high-altitude representatives of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Liodessus">Liodessus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> reported from Costa Rica. On the other hand, <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Liodessus">Liodessus</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="cerrodelamuerte">cerrodelamuerte</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> sp. nov. appears to be restricted to Costa Rica’s highest altitudes, where it inhabits small pools in Páramo environments, likely characterized by cool water. The distance, as the crow flies, between the highest distribution point of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Liodessus">Liodessus</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="quetzalicus">quetzalicus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> sp. nov. and the closest locality of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Liodessus">Liodessus</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="cerrodelamuerte">cerrodelamuerte</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> sp. nov. is only 12 km, within the same mountain massif. These <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Liodessus">Liodessus</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> may represent an interesting system for comparative studies on the thermal tolerance of high-altitude species.</p>
