The species was originally described based on a single specimen from Thuringia, Germany, collected in 1877, and has not been reported from Central Europe since. New material collected in the Bavarian Alps, Germany, has enabled a redescription and updated diagnosis of the species. The morphology of the male terminalia is documented in detail and illustrated together with the general habitus. Diagnostic characters confirm that <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Boletina">B.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="kowarzi">kowarzi</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> belongs to the species group centred around <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Boletina">B.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="dubia">dubia</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>, characterised by a two-branched gonostylus with elongated branches, but it is distinguished from related species by the structure of the inner gonostylar branch and the arrangement of spines on the cerci. The new specimens were collected in an old-growth forest remnant in the Bavarian Alps, characterised by abundant dead wood and a rich community of wood-inhabiting fungi. The discovery suggests that the species may persist in relic montane forests, although its ecological requirements remain poorly understood.</p>

      <title>Introduction</title>
<p>Fungus gnats (<tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="order" reg="Diptera">Diptera</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>: <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family" reg="Mycetophilidae">Mycetophilidae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name>) have gained considerable attention over the last decades and represent one of the most intensively studied groups of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="order" reg="Diptera">Diptera</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B31">Whitmore et al. 2021</xref>). Nevertheless, <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B19">Meier et al. (2025)</xref> characterised the family as a “dark taxon”, with a highly uncertain global species richness. This is underscored by a recent integrative revision of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family" reg="Mycetophilidae">Mycetophilidae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> from Singapore, which revealed 115 species new to science from a single, small geographic area (~730 km2), corresponding to an undescribed-to-described ratio of approximately 23:1 (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B1">Amorim et al. 2025</xref>). Indeed, the taxonomic deficit is not restricted to the tropics. Even in Europe, despite more than two centuries of taxonomic study, a good number of species remains undescribed (e.g. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B15">Kjærandsen and Søli 2020</xref>), emphasising that <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family" reg="Mycetophilidae">Mycetophilidae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> exemplify a globally under-characterised lineage across both well- and poorly studied regions.</p>
<p>It is noteworthy that several valid European <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family" reg="Mycetophilidae">Mycetophilidae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> species, described from material collected in the nineteenth century, have not been recorded since, including <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Boletina">Boletina</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="fuscula">fuscula</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> Holmgren, 1883, <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Leia">Leia</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="maculosa">maculosa</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> Strobl, 1898, and <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Phthinia">Phthinia</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="gracilis">gracilis</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> Winnertz, 1864 (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B3">Chandler 2005</xref> and subsequent authors). We provide an updated diagnosis of the species, with emphasis on the male terminalia, supplemented by detailed photographs of the terminalia and habitus, as well as DNA barcode data and the diagnostic molecular combination.</p>

<p>The examined material was collected using Townes-type Malaise traps and preserved in 80% ethanol denatured with methyl ethyl ketone (<abbrev xlink:title="methyl ethyl ketone">MEK</abbrev>). The traps were installed in the Totengraben natural forest reserve within the Mangfall Forest protected area in the Bavarian Alps. The reserve covers 46.7 ha and includes a ca. 5 ha remnant of primeval forest embedded within a near-natural mixed mountain forest (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B24">Schnell 2004</xref>). It is situated on a steep northwestern slope at 970–1390 m a.s.l. and is characterised by a cool montane climate with a mean annual temperature of 4.5 °C and annual precipitation of 1800–2000 mm. Summers are cool, winters snowy, and the growing season lasts approximately 185 days. The vegetation corresponds to an Aposerido-Fagetum mixed mountain forest on Main Dolomite, dominated by fir, spruce, beech, and sycamore maple (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B24">Schnell 2004</xref>). The primeval forest stands contain trees approximately 200–450 years old. One trap (<named-content content-type="dwc:verbatimCoordinates">47.59395°N, 11.69079°E</named-content>) was placed near an old, broken beech tree (<tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Fagus">Fagus</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="sylvatica">sylvatica</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> L.) heavily infested with fungi, whereas the other (<named-content content-type="dwc:verbatimCoordinates">47.59420°N, 11.69417°E</named-content>) was placed about 260 meters from the first trap in a stand of old beech, fir, and spruce trees.</p>

Accordingly, male terminalia were dissected, macerated in 10% KOH, neutralised with acetic acid, rinsed in distilled water, and examined in glycerine; they are preserved in glycerine in a microvial attached to the specimen. Photographs of the habitus and terminalia were taken using a Leica K5C camera mounted on a Leica 205C stereomicroscope, with image stacking performed in LAS X or Helicon Focus. Image plates were prepared in Adobe Photoshop CS5 (cf. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B14">Kjærandsen et al. 2022</xref>). Ferdinand Kowarz, employed by the Imperial Austrian Telegraph Department, was among the foremost European dipterologists of the second half of the nineteenth century (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B20">Osten Sacken 1903</xref>). Over the course of his career, Kowarz assembled several <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="order" reg="Diptera">Diptera</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> collections, which he sold at various times out of economic necessity (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B21">Pont 1998</xref>). These collections are now dispersed across European museums. Part of his <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="family" reg="Mycetophilidae">Mycetophilidae</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> material is housed in the Swedish Museum of Natural History, Stockholm (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B17">Kurina 2003</xref>), while other specimens are distributed among various European institutions (Kurina pers. obs.). The holotype of <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Boletina">B.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="kowarzi">kowarzi</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> is preserved in the collection of the Zoological Institute, St. Petersburg, Russia. <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B29">Stackelberg (1943)</xref> provided illustrations of the male terminalia, which enable the unambiguous recognition of conspecific specimens. However, the general habitus of the species (Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F1">1</xref>) and the aedeagal complex (Fig. <xref ref-type="fig" rid="F2">2D–G</xref>) are illustrated here for the first time. <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Boletina">Boletina</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="kowarzi">kowarzi</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> appears to be a genuinely rare species with a scattered distribution. Remarkably, despite intensive collecting activity in Central Europe, no additional records from the region have been reported until now. The species was recorded from two old-growth broadleaved forest localities in SE Norway in the late 1990s (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B6">Gammelmo and Søli 2006</xref>; <xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B9">GBIF 2026</xref>) and is red-listed as vulnerable (<abbrev xlink:title="vulnerable">VU</abbrev>) in Norway (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B7">Gammelmo et al. 2021</xref>). It has not been rediscovered during the intensified study of Nordic fungus gnats in recent decades (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B15">Kjærandsen and Søli 2020</xref>) and has hitherto been absent from DNA barcode datasets including those generated by metabarcoding within the National Insect Monitoring in Norway (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B2">Åström and Davey 2025</xref>). The material examined here was collected in the Totengraben natural forest reserve in the Bavarian Alps, an area characterised by large quantities of dead wood (approximately 150 m3/ha) and a rich diversity of wood-inhabiting fungi (<xref ref-type="bibr" rid="B24">Schnell 2004</xref>). Such old-growth forests now persist only as remnants in Central Europe. Given the scarcity of fungus gnat records from Alpine forests, it remains unclear whether <tp:taxon-name><tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="genus" reg="Boletina">B.</tp:taxon-name-part> <tp:taxon-name-part taxon-name-part-type="species" reg="kowarzi">kowarzi</tp:taxon-name-part></tp:taxon-name> is specifically associated with such old-growth habitats.</p>
